1 Get Back To The Delta
This
song came from spending too much time in the big cities. Also being from
the Delta, this gave me a chance to reflect on the mentality of seeing both
sides. There’s an old saying stating “Style come from the city and
wisdom from the country.” I think this is pretty accurate. Writing
the song came easy except for the last verse. I didn’t want all three verses
saying basically the same thing, so I used it to express my feeling toward
the problems going on in Kosovo at that time.

The title of this CD may raise a few questions. “ Skin it back” is an expression
used by both the people living in the Delta and also it’s musicians. To
most, it means roll up sleeves and go harder. This is used with musicians meaning
“Go for it”. The CD cover is a copy of a four foot, three dimensional
painting by Marco Sierra, my nephew in Moon Lake Mississippi.
I started recording in my home studio ("Scooterbug Studio", after my youngest
daughter - her nick name is Scooterbugs). After recording most of the
guitar work to a click track, I realized that it was to much for me with my
limited knowledge of computers. I talked Warrick Thomas (Sound
Concepts) into taking it over. He saved my life. This is a result
of our combined efforts.

2 Train Train
I’ve
always loved this song. I don’t know all the lyrics, so I made the last
verse up. I hope Shorty doesn’t mind. This song was a pleasure to
record. The two harps work so well together.

Since
this an instrumental, I can name it any damn thing I want to. I usually
use the first sensible thing that comes to mind. The first thing that
hit me was my Father. He loves honest country music and country blues, especially
slide guitar. My only regret is I wish I could have used my Drobro (Dad calls
them hound dog guitars) on this track.
When
my wife Vanda and I were married, the Justice Of The Peace gave us a warrantee
stating that our marriage was good for fifty years. Since then my life
has improved in so many ways. Could it be the Fifty Year Guarantee?
I
have to be careful with this one. I was thinking of two separate things.
One, the problems we are facing now days with our friends and loved ones when
alcohol, drugs, peer pressure, and all the other modern day problems get in
the way. I wanted to use this to reflect on what we are going to, about
the way we are treating our own earth. Looking for who’s to blame is not
enough.
Have
you ever been drunk from a bottle of Tequila and found out that you ate the
worm? Enough said.
This
song explains itself. It was recorded live in the studio with one mic
in the kick box and 2 hanging off the wall.
This
is the first lyrical song that I ever wrote. I was thinking about how people
can take a relationship and make a game of it. Well I can do the same,
however it never works.
Back
in my home town, Helena and West Helena Arkansas, as teenagers we use spend
hours driving up and down Cherry Street watching the girls and looking for something
to do. The most familiar phrase to come from a teenager’s mouth was "let’s
go draggin cherry".
One
of my favorite tracks on the CD. This song tells it like it is. The guitar
and harmonica remind me of a bunch of barnyard animals squawking at each other.
I
never intended to record this song, however, after doing it on TV, there was
such a response I was advised to record it. I intended it to be a solo
with just guitar, stomp box and vocal, but then we added Chris on harmonica
and came up with the idea of using the girls. I love it.
I
wrote this song years ago when my daughter Misty was a baby. After driving
through the night from Texas to Arkansas to see her, she was sick. Everyone
else went to bed while I stayed up with my unplugged electric guitar and wrote
the song while watching her. I finished a basic idea of the song by the
time she went to sleep. Thus the name.
